Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Israel, Avigdor Lieberman, met last month with the Prime Minister of Hungary Gordon Bajnai, in Budapest. According to Israeli media, the two discussed expanding economic and commercial relations between the countries and noted the good relations between them. I wonder: if Ferenc Szálasi was alive would Mr. Bajnai embrace him with such warmth too? Had Nyilaskeresztes Párt – Hungarista Mozgalom (Arrow Cross Party-Hungarist Movement) existed today, would the Prime Minister join its ranks?

The Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Israel is a new local version of Szálasi, just as his party “Israel our Home” resembles Nyilaskeresztes Párt – Hungarista Mozgalom. True, Lieberman’s gang has not been involved in any genocide yet (though taking part in Israeli government does make it guilty in other crimes against the Palestinian people), but (1) it would definitely endorse such crimes; (2) it calls explicitly and in public to implement racist policies and enact fascist laws (in its platform, the parliament, the press, etc.) so, (3) it consciously encourages the Jewish public within Israel to discriminate against and even physically harm Arab citizens and leftist activists, hence preparing Israeli people to silently, not to say gladly, accept hate crimes when they occur in due course.

‘Racist-fascist views’

The honourable readers should realize that Israel our Home, governed by Lieberman, waged a war on Arab citizens (about 20 per cent of Israel’s population), let alone on those who live under Israeli military rule in the occupied Palestinian territories, years ago. But in contrast to many other political parties, Lieberman’s bullies have been systematically putting their racist-fascist views into effect since they joined the coalition and entered the government. Thus, for example, apart from referring to Arabs as a  “demographic danger”, “terrorists by nature”, “fifth column” and likewise “blessings”, Lieberman overtly called to execute Arab politicians for being “traitors”, while his political mob repeatedly tried to pass laws which will disallow Arabs to be elected or vote for parliament unless they commit themselves to Israel as a Jewish-Zionist state and serve in the Israeli military or alike.

In order to cover the whole range of hate speeches, racist slogans and law proposals made by Israel our Home in general and Lieberman in particular, I would need to write a book – perhaps of a few volumes. But the bottom line is clear – Szálasi and Nyilaskeresztes Párt – Hungarista Mozgalom are alive and kicking in current Israel, and they are called Lieberman and Israel our Home. It is therefore so ironic and hypocritical, not to say disgusting, to hear Lieberman, of all people, calling on Hungary to ban hate speech. If hate speech is to be banned, Lieberman is doomed to be banned too – especially in the homeland of criminals such as Szálasi, Döme Sztójay and other scum.

Editor’s note: Ferenc Szálasi was the leader of the National Socialist Arrow Cross Party, and the de facto Prime Minister for the final three months of Hungary‘s participation in the Second World War. It is estimated that his men murdered 10-15,000 Jews. He was executed for crimes against the state after the war.
